Rigvedic and Harappan Convergence

The 2nd Prof. B.B. Lal Memorial Lecture by Dr. R.S. Bisht on 1st February 2025 celebrated 100 years of the Harappan Civilization’s discovery, shedding light on the fascinating convergence between the Rigvedic and Harappan cultures. Dr. Bisht challenged the myth of the Rigvedic Aryans as nomadic invaders, revealing them as an advanced, urban society engaged in trade, maritime activities, and sophisticated urban planning.
The Rigveda describes fortified cities (purs), villages (grāmas), and structures like harmya (mansions), reflecting a complex urban hierarchy. Evidence of maritime trade, water management systems, and diverse funerary practices further highlights the Rigvedic people’s advanced civilization, closely mirroring Harappan achievements.
This exploration not only redefines our understanding of ancient India but also underscores the timeless relevance of its wisdom in addressing modern challenges. Join us in celebrating this rich heritage and its enduring legacy!
